As well as being one of the most commonly used laboratory animals, rats are becoming increasingly popular as pets. They make intelligent and sensitive pets that become very attached to their owners. However, rats need a lot of looking after. They need daily attention and opportunities to explore outside their cage. Rats need approximately 30 minutes of care per day, including handling, so if you don't feel you can give them this much time a rat is not really the pet for you.
